About
Doug Silton
A world with stories. With both light and dark. With movement. This is a world I want to be a part of. To create with. To end sentences with prepositions.
I am a movement artist and an athlete. Since 2000 I’ve combined and honed my crafts of partner and solo dance, photography, videography, directing, and creating movement through choreography and improvisation.
On my official website, you can watch my Concept Videos, social dance and performance and competition dance videos, listen to audio I’ve produced and helped create, track where I am in the world, and more.
I have been a professional in the dance world since 2000. Making my dance debut as a Lindy Hopper, then falling into Carolina Shag, West Coast Swing, Balboa, and Latin street dances, I’ve always loved social dancing. And learning. And creating. Every year I would learn to follow the dance I was leading and also start to lead a new dance. And thus my dance life as progressed. I love finding out how things work. And rejecting reasons from coaches that don’t find purchase. And facilitating efficient ways to allow for cohesive conversation in our dances to happen.
I have always been interested in photography. I come from a family of artists, and specifically I grew up watching my mom shoot on her Hasselblad and develop film in her darkroom. And now I shoot digitally and edit in Lightroom. I absolutely love creating in my studio in Boring, Oregon and on location – both in photo shoots and in candid / improv real life situations. I love sharing stories and showing humanity. I have exhibitions in Portland, Oregon and my photography is available for purchase for you to have in your home!
My life now is made up of adventures. Excursions. Aventuras. I travel for both art and scenery and to push myself physically, mentally, and emotionally. I love sharing my adventures through art – both still photography and videos. Follow me on my calendar and Instagram and through my Vlog called “A Doug’s Life.”
My happiest moments are creating art with others – collaborating on ideas and stories. I have been been blessed with being surrounded by super creative friends and through networking in my arts worlds, I’ve produced collaborations with some of the top contemporary dancers and artists! I love playing with lighting, direction, and scenes.
I started spinning Fire Staff in 2003 and then Poi in 2006. My instructors have all been Burmese and Thai spinners working on Koh Tao, Thailand. Lotus Bar was my nightly home for many Decembers – taking flow arts lessons at sunset and then performing with my coaches at night during the fire shows. I didn’t find the ability to meditate through Flow Arts until 2019. Now I travel the world sharing my love of flow arts, teaching in the small towns and villages that I pass through on my adventures and spreading the love of meditation through Flow Arts.
